Between a Rock and a Jarred Place

Can I tell you something? You're not going to like it, but I think you really need to hear this. I want you to know because I think you deserve the truth.
You’re wasting your time and energy and it’s messing up your health. Imagine a mason jar (because we’re all obsessed with mason jars – thank you Pinterest). If you were going to fill the mason jar with either rocks or grains of sand, one by one, which would you rather use? Rocks, right? They take up more room and require less time and energy to fill the jar in the long run, even though rocks weigh more.


You’re spending your time scrolling through Facebook and seeing articles about keto diets, intermittent fasting, counting your macros, HIIT, promises of massive weight loss in four weeks, and all of this equipment making you believe if you bought this one thing you’ll finally lose the weight or have Jessie Graff’s abs. It’s
exhausting, it’s ruining your health, and it’s taking you even further from your goals.
All of these things are sand behaviors. Sand behaviors are those little, usually difficult, things that may give you small wins but take forever to get to your goal, if they help at all. What I want you to do is focus on rock behaviors – which I’ll list below. These are the “simple” things that will get you the big wins but they have to be done consistently and for more than a few weeks at a time- to be brutally honest, you’ll have a lot of ups and downs as your body adjusts to the changes.


The first week or two you’ll probably be really excited as you lose water weight. Then your weight may not go down as much, plateau, or even go up a little bit temporarily. This is where people give up, claim what they’re doing doesn’t work, and then go to more difficult behaviors. Then you go through the cycle again, feeling lost and defeated.
Stop giving up before the magic happens. Success isn’t linear. We can’t give up when the track to success takes what can be perceived as a dip, when in reality, it’s part of the process. I can’t say this enough – it takes time to lose the weight, to get stronger, and to get the definition you want. It takes patience, consistency, and a willingness to be honest and vulnerable. Not just weeks, but months
and sometimes years, depending on your goal.

It’s the rock behaviors that are going to give you the results you want. Most people don’t do these because they don’t give the dramatic, “I lost 10 lbs. in 10 days!” effect. They’re the slow but sure method that gives the long term, safe, and effective results. Anything that promises something grand in a short period of time is likely to come at a high cost – your muscle mass, your energy, your happiness, and your health.

This isn’t complicated but we make it complicated because we don’t want to put in the long-term effort and be patient. Be willing to slow down. Stop falling for the quick fixes; they don’t exist. Be honest about what you can do long term. Be patient with yourself and your body. Question why you choose the uncertainness of sand. Be vulnerable enough to be transparent and honest with yourself, and you will reap the rewards.
